When the Patriots 2012-2013 schedule was released earlier this week, the first thing I heard was that the Patriots had one of the easiest schedules ones in the league. Sigh. Let’s look at the schedule and I’ll point out what I think to be are going to be the trickier of the games. Here we go!

The first challenging game that comes up in Week 3 when the Patriots will face the Baltimore Ravens AT Baltimore.

The Ravens are still a scary team. We can all agree that the playoff game the Patriots won last season was nothing short of a miracle ( an MHK miracle, that is). Defense is where this team excels and with aging veterans like Ray Lewis (see above) and Ed Reed, this might just be their last chance at making it to the Super Bowl. The Ravens also have the 2nd most difficult schedule in the league and a win against the Patriots early in the season could pave the way for a successful start to the season. Oh and by the way, the game is in Baltimore. Womp womp.

I guess one thing to rely on is that Joe Flacco is meh at best and that’s a part of the Ravens that the Patriots ALWAYS can capitalize on.

Here’s a pretty funny rant from Slate about Flacco’s “humility.”

Next up, the Patriots against the Buffalo Bills at home and on the road

The Buffalo Bills are one those teams that are somewhat unpredictable. They have every reason to be a good team. Their big pickup in the offseason was “Super” Mario Williams from my second love the Houston Texans. The Bills tend to struggle on the road and luckily for them, they’re facing the Patriots at home. I marked this game, rather these match-ups, as worth watching because when the Bills decide to be a good team, they tend to do it well.

The man with the beard, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is just so inconsistent with the way he plays and a lot of the team’s success varies because of that.

Last season, they had a 5-2 start, which gave a lot of Bills fans some hope…and then they lost 11 straight games and quickly disappeared from any sort of playoff chatter.

The last notable game in my opinion is the Monday Night Football game against the Houston Texans.

Now from what I’ve read on everyone’s …

Ross Ventrone.

A name that most of Patriot Nation has probably heard of. Not because he’s some free agent looking to make a new start in New England or even because he’s veteran who just wants to win.

Nope.

The reason why Ross Ventrone sounds familiar is that the Villanova grad has been in a on again, off again relationship with the Patriots Practice and Active Roster.

Even his stat sheet on Pro-Football-Reference looks a little sad.

I remember when I first saw the 5-foot-8-inches defensive back on the practice field. He wasn’t half bad. But it was also the time when it seemed like the Patriots were putting together a band of players who were no taller than 5’10.

When he was first signed by the Patriots in 2010, it seemed as though he was following the footsteps of his older brother Ray Ventrone, who has now found a home with the Cleveland Browns. But as it turns out, Ross would be involved in 19 transactions with the Patriots.

Check out how the New England Patriots section of his Professional Career section on Wikipedia reads:

New England Patriots

After going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, Ventrone was signed by the New England Patriots on April 29, 2010. He played in the team’s preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints before being waived on August 15. He was re-signed on August 23, and played in the team’s final two preseason games before being waived during final cuts on September 4. He was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad on October 19, 2010. He was re-signed to a future contract for the 2011 season on January 18, 2011, played in one game on Sept 24, 2011, and was cut Oct. 1, 2011. [1] Ventrone was signed to the practice squad on October 4, 2011. He was promoted to the active roster on October 8. He was waived on October 17, only to be re-signed on October 19 and cut again on November 5, 2011.

…oh and he was signed again today, November 12.
Someone better alert the Ross Ventrone Wikipedia page moderator.

I’m thinking there’s  something about this kid that the Patriots can’t seem to let go. Or maybe they’re just getting a little desperate on the defensive side of the ball.

Ventrone’s only tackle this year was during the week five win against the Jets. Maybe he’ll bring …

Call me silly but I just managed to plan a trip to New York City the same weekend as the AFC Conference Championship game. Note that I was planning to come back to Providence on Saturday assuming that I’d have to work at the stadium bright and early on Sunday.

Go me.

Lesson learned, no matter how many analysts and experts say that a team is bound to win, don’t assume anything just yet.  Especially when the team is the New England Patriots (who have now lost three straight in the post season) and the opposing team is a loud and unnecessarily trash-talky New York Jets (who have made more news off the field than on it).  I wasn’t niave though, I mean my inner lifelong Patriots fan wanted to assume that they would annihilate the Jets and quiet them down once and for all. But, the actual football writer in me realized that there were a lot of factors going against the Patriots.

Long story short, the Patriots’ efforts against the Jets were not enough. (Check out my latest piece on Patriots Insider about this loss - “A Disappointing End” FYI: This was also featured on the front page of profootball.scout.com so yeah, that was purrty cool ). Worst part about the loss, and I’m sure all Patriots fans would agree with this, is listening to all the talk the week after. Whether it be coming from the Jets fans or the football experts, it was all just depressing. I was guilty of being a huge sad panda for a few days after the loss. It got so bad the my friend Johnny (@RumfordJohnny) asked to me to stop being so depressing or he’d have to unfollow me. Ugh. I kept my sorrows to myself. Here are some of the sadder tweets.

Yeah. It wasn’t the best of days for Patriot Nation.

Good news was that I got to spend an extra day in the city with my little brother, who was in town competing in forensics at Columbia University, and Ryan (@ryandonnell). And although our hotel was pretty awesome (and wicked cheap!) the upgrade they gave us was perfect for the day time but was a stab in the heart at night. See for yourself.

My trip was overall fantastic. Stayed away from Central Park on Friday because the Jets Rally that was taking place …

I know that as a football “insider”, I should be wicked good at predicting the winners of games. Heck, even be able to give you the score but to my (and my significant others’ ) dismay, I am terrible at making predictions.

I can almost guarantee that the opposite of my pick will win the game. Case in point, look at this tweet:

This tweet pretty much says it all. Earlier in the week, I scoffed at the idea that the Seattle Seahawks were any real threat. Obviously, my judgment was a little off. I guess when you’re surrounded by teams like the Rams and the 49ers, it’s easy to be overlooked come playoff time.  Forgive Matt Hasselbeck for overlooking your team but to be honest, nobody was rooting for you to win against, in my mom’s opinion ‘the best team with the sweetest quarterback’ ever. The New Orleans Saints’ had every analyst giving them the win.

To be honest, I think the only people I heard saying that the Seahawks were going to win were the random people that call into WEEI and the Sports Hub wanting to be that caller than will make the ‘other’ call.  I’m usually a fan of the underdog as I grew up watching Rudy and cheering for the likes of Darren Sproles and Danny Woodhead.

I was completely surprised by this out of nowhere win by the Seahawks. Looking at the numbers, Hasselbeck was 22 for 35 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns. You know who usually puts up numbers like that, especially in the playoffs? Not Matt Hasselbeck.

I needed a Hasselbeck picture and this one was just way too good not to use. Ladies,  I know you’ll enjoy it. Gentlemen, sorry.

It has a really creepy artsy tone to it.

You’ve got to give Seattle some credit though, coming into the playoffs with the worst regular season record and the first division winner with a losing record (7-9). The addition of running back Marshawn Lynch early in the  season not only helped secure them the win against the Saints but it also gave Lynch a chance to make a post season appearance. Something that he would never have gotten with the Buffalo Bills.

Bravo Seahawks. I wish ya’ll the best but I really don’t know if your offense will hold up against the Bears and Brian Urlacher..wait, …
