Halfway through the Patriots and Broncos game on Saturday, it quickly changed from a playoff game to a scrimmage between a varsity and JV team. I’ll admit that I was part of the hype going into this game. I had my fears about Tim Tebow and his fourth quarter heroics, the underrated defense and the ability of the team to adapt to make Tim Tebow successful. All of those things combined set the stage for Saturday’s game to be, if nothing else, exciting.

Before we dive into everything Patriots, I have to talk about that INSANE San Francisco and New Orleans game?! That has got to be one of the BEST football games I’ve ever seen. Period.

Between the lead tradeoffs to two quarterbacks playing at an exceptionally high level, I couldn’t have asked for a better game to get me ready for the Patriots and Broncos game. One of the best moments of this game was after veteran tight end Vernon Davis makes the game-winning catch, he couldn’t help but get emotional. How could you blame him? He’s been with the 49ers since 2006 and this was only his first playoff win. Check out this amazing video of Davis after the catch, I promise that you’ll get emotional too.

Man, that was awesome.

Ok back to the Patriots!

Where do I start? We had tight ends playing running back, a quarterback punting and impressive showings at defensive end.

Aaron Hernandez kills it as a running back
Number 81 managed 61 yards on the ground AND caught four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. This is a perfect example of one my most favorite things about this Patriots team. Regardless of how successful or how good they’ve become, the desire to contribute and play as a team never stops. Hernandez wasn’t just good at it, he looked like he was having a pretty good time doing it. Hernandez spoke about it during the press conference.

I’d say I was surprised, but I was happy to be doing it, and I hope I can do a little more of it. I just do what the coaches ask me, and they put me in position to try to make plays, and I just try to help the team and just try to get the big gain.

Tom Brady can punt like no other
Holy moly. How shocked were you when this …

Another Sunday, another Patriots victory…sort of.

I spoke of the Patriots being an underdog of some sorts. A type of team that has made a habit of slow starts and commanding victories. Frankly, this system made the games much more exciting and gave the wins a bit more depth.

Today though, was a different story. The Patriots defense was showing its weaknesses and the offense seemed to be playing on a completely different level. With a final score of 31-24, you’d never guess that the Indianapolis Colts haven’t won a game all season. That score didn’t show that the starting quarterback for the Colts, Dan Orlovsky, was a last minute decision and hasn’t started a game since 2008 when he was with the Detroit Lions (not to mention, he was a back up for the Texans in 2009 – I had no idea who he was back then either..).

(I swear, these are the creepiest photos of NFL teams)

In his postgame press conference, there was a question that Dan Orlovsky answered that I thought really showed his maturity:

Q: Can you separate a loss with playing pretty well?

DO: I don’t have a desire to, to be honest with you. My goal is to go out there and win a ball game, bar none. The best chance to do that is to play well at this position. So, I just didn’t play good enough to win today. I don’t care about anything else; I’m at the point in my career and my life where I just want to win. So, it’s hard for me to separate it and I don’t have any desire to.

Orlovsky is at a point in his career where he not only wants to win, he also wants to start.

If I got the starting position over the three-year back-up Curtis Painter, I wouldn’t care too much about whether I played well or not, it should always come down to whether or not you were able to get the victory.

Another thing I noticed was that people still booed Adam Vinatieri when he stepped onto the field at Gillette. Really? Ok, I get that at the time of his departure, he was pretty much joining the Dark Side as far as Patriots fans were concerned but to hear people still upset by this was rather surprising. I mean, Stephen Gostkowski has missed a few chip …

It seems like it is quickly becoming a trend for the Patriots to convincingly defeat their opponents. I know, it’s only week two and I’m staring to sound like a pretty cocky fan but did you see today’s game?

Hell, Vince Wilfork got his first ever interception AND ran it back for 20 some yards…How could you not be wicked psyched?! Here’s the video of the interception

Gotta thank @PatriotsHaven for the video!

I was actually at Ryan’s parents’ house for a Sunday dinner during the game..but the ever-so-dedicated blogger in me decided to type out my thoughts of the game on my Blackberry AND THEN email it to myself.

So here it goes, The Rough Cut: Patriots vs Charger 9|18|11

- Tom Brady looks crisp and relaxed behind the line and even outside the pocket

- Chad Ochocinco finally finding his niche: the deep middle passes. this wasn’t a major option for Brady since the prime days of Moss..

- Antonio Gates has been less than relevant. Hasn’t been targeted nearly as much as everyone expected. I’d give the credit to Pat Chung for doing an excellent job on coverage and blocking.

- A questionable call made on DE Andre Carter with a strong hit on Philip Rivers. Looked clean but the fact that he held on for an extra second made it a personal foul.

- Vince Wilfork gets his first career interception AND ran it back. Great form and ball protection. (This might have been my favorite play of the entire game) Did anyone else notice Vince’s impeccable ball protection technique? Cradled it and all.

- A close hit on Brady gives me the chills and flashbacks of Brady’s knee injury. Yeah, let’s not do that again.

- Leigh Bodden gets called twice for holding. This brings light to an area where the Patriots may have some issues: Unneeded penalties. Clean it up.

- Considering that Steven Jackson of was the only offensive weapon for Rivers, it still says something that they were able to cut the Patriots’ to a single touchdown at one point of the game says that there is still some improvement for the Patriots’ Defense. I’m not saying it’s terrible because they did cause FOUR turnovers.

- Patriots running game contuinues to be stable and explosive when necessary. Nothing fancy but effective. We also got a Stevan Ridley appearance..even if it …

Where do I begin?

This weekend was by far, one of the busiest I’ve had all year. Except for maybe when I have to work a soccer game then a football game at the stadium, then it becomes a little tiring. I guess we can start in the order of which the events occurred.

SATURDAY: Boston Sports Blogapalooza II – Boston, MA

Man, this event is probably one of my favorite things to attend. Thanks to the hard work and diligence of Mr. Joe Gill, this event has transformed from a small networking event in May to THE sports blogging event of the New England area.  When the first ever Blogapalooza happened in May, it was truly my first experience in networking and actually putting a face to many of the blogs that I read on a daily basis.  Needless to say, I was pretty nervous to see exactly how I compare to some of the bigger names.

I networked my butt off with everyone from Ian of The Rap Sheet of the Boston Herald to Ian Logue of the huge site www.PatsFans.com. Unfortunately, due to  some prior engagements neither of the Ian’s were able to make it to the event. Fret not, there were some other pretty big names that were present at the Blogapalooza II event. I met Robert Hyldburg Jr., the author of “Total Patriots” ( a book that I use way too often when writing articles for Patriots Insider).  It was pretty incredible to speak with him on some the specifics of how the book came into existence and also reminiscing about some Patriots history.

What more can a dedicated Patriots fan/aspiring sports writer ask for?

Oh, but there was even more awesomeness to come from this event.

There are a group of dedicated Patriots people on twittter that I have often had the pleasure of being associated with. These people are some of the most interesting, hilarious and coolest football tweeps on the twitter and it’s not too often that I get a chance to meet them in person and talk about the one thing that has brought us together: Patriots Football.

One of these individuals trekked all the way from the west coast to network with some Boston’s best. Mike Dussault, or known to most of Patriots Nation as @PatsPropaganda (www.patspropanda.com). If you haven’t already, please check out Mike’s work.  …
