Free Agency is Freeekin’ Ridiculous & March Madne$$

There are a few things in life that I know I just don’t have any control over like hurricanes, my reactions to goals at a Bruins game and sneezes, but then there is something like the Free Agency season in the NFL that really drives me insane.  I know that this is a really important time for teams to look at the major weaknesses of their defense and offense and perhaps maybe making some big moves to get higher draft picks, but seriously, can we please take into consideration the effects of these moves have on their fans.  Some of the bigger moves that have gone on have literally blown my mind.  So this post (for the most part) will be dedicated to the big moves that have occurred the past few days and why I either approve or disapprove.

MIKE VRABEL & MATT CASSEL —> THE CHIEFS

Cassel, why are you wearing a White Sox hat?

Cassel, why are you wearing a White Sox hat?

This is, by far the one that has irked me off the most.  Besides the fact that the Patriots got absolutely nothing for these two, its MIKE VRABEL.  You know how much I’ve always wanted a Mike Vrabel jersey?!? When I went to my first football game in Miami way back in 06′, I literally, was the only person cheering for Mike Vrabel. The Dolphins fans around thought I was making someone up on the Pats.  Folks, he’s one of my favorite players. One of my favorite moments is in the 2005 Super Bowl when Vrabel caught a 2 yard TD, I vividly remember him telling Brady after he celebrated the touchdown, “Don’t EVER do that to me again.”  How are we just giving this up? Given that he has not been as effective as he has been in the past 4 seasons, but neither has Donovan McNabb but Philly isn’t giving him away like a free sample.  The used Mike Vrabel like a bonus product for Matt Cassel, like he’s just some random free agent that doesn’t count.  This is just absurd.  Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi were a great inside/outside LB pair..and now it’ll never be the same.  I hope this is what you wanted Bill, because if this doesn’t work out, I will be very, VERY upset. Oh, P.S. Good job on getting Fred Taylor.

BRIAN DAWKINS —> THE BRONCOS
When I saw this on t.v., I literally went, “ARE YOU CEREAL?!?” A few posts back I had a pretty epic blog about how vital Brian Dawkins was for the Philadelphia Eagles and seemingly, out of nowhere, HE GETS TRADED TO THE DENVER BRONCOS?!? Listen, McDaniels, I do like the fact that you’re young, talented and is pretty much the Ballsy McFarren of the NFL. But you cannot, I repeat, CANNOT just remove an intricate player like Weapon X from a team that he has played for the last 13 years.  I understand that $17 million (with a chance at $27 if he performs well) sounds like a good amount, but that’s only for five years.  Matt Leinart has a contract that sounds something like $40 million for six years with the Cards and he has done absolutely nothing for the team.  Philly, why did you let him go? Joe M. maybe you can answer this question for me? Was it because you guys were running out of room for all his Wolverine figurines? Was it because his teammates wouldn’t call him Logan when he wasn’t in uniform? I’d understand if these were the Denver Broncos from 1997-1998 and they were just coming off Super Bowl wins but seriously this the Denver Broncos with the whiny QB and a new coach.  The franchise may be one of the most storied, but you are not stepping into a franchise that has paved a way for a guaranteed trip to the playoffs this coming season.  With Jay Cutler throwing an average of 279.4 yds per game it’s clear to see that Cutler is good at more than just throwing fits.
SIDENOTE: Jay Cutler, stop being all butt-hurt because your new coach contemplated trading you for Matt Cassel.  You are not Jake the Snake, you have not brought the team anywhere near a Super Bowl.  Plus, if the Denver Broncos found nothing wrong with dropping Mike Shanahan, what makes you think that you are indispensable to the team? It’s business. Be a better QB and stop giving the whole team the silent treatment, it just makes you look like an annoying GF.
So apparently, the Broncos also picked up the Texans former WR David Anderson, for those who do not know him he was infamous for doing the Conan String Dance at the Texans Vs Bengals game.  Not the most incredible player, but still makes me sad that he’s not a Texan anymore.

TJ HOUSHY —> THE SEAHAWKS?
Hm, if i was a talented wide receiver that was tired of being on a team that had a drama king, an injured qb and a unforeseen chance to make it to the post season where would I go? Oh I know, The Seattle Seahawks? Yeah, that would be a negative.  I know that you have shown some interest in working Matt Hasselbeck (why, I do not know) but is it worth giving up the ability to work with a team that has the proper layout set up for a successful season? Why not go to a team like THE PATRIOTS!!!! Can you imagine that kind of WR artillery? Randy Moss, Wes Welker <3 , and TJ Housh.  At that point, I wouldn’t care if Tom Brady is throwing from the sidelines, those WR’s would still be able to catch balls and score touchdowns.  One of the benefits of him going to this team is that there are already 2 good WR on the team (Burleson and Branch) both of whom could use a breath of fresh air from TJ.  If Matt Hasselbeck can comeback and stay healthy, then MAYBE the Seahawks have a shot at winning their conference, or at least winning more than just 4 games.  TJ Housh, you have the ability to take a team to the next level, kind of like the Larry Fitz effect, I respect your decision to go to Seattle, I just hope that you realize that it’s going to be a lot work.  Hey, at least half of your new team do not have a criminal record.. yay!

MARCH MADNESS!
The time has come people..MARCH MADNESS.  Nothing, except maybe fantasy football and football season in general, makes me happier than filling out my bracket.  I must admit, I’ve gotten lucky the past few years with guessing some upsets and getting the final 4 correct.  This March, however is a completely different story.  First of all, I’ve seen much more of the games this season than I have before. I won’t lie, I’ve grown some attachments to some of theses teams and even more, some of the players.  Being in attendance at one of the coolest upsets (PC vs. Pitt), I’m convinced that this NCAA men’s basketball season is one of the craziest and definitely ANYTHING is possible.  So many teams have rose to #1 only to drop 3 days later.  So what are my picks for this year’s tournament? Good question.  Here are the teams I’m looking at currently:

1. UCONN – this team has been pretty unstoppable.  Hasheem Thabeet has some of the best highlight reels, not to mention one of the coolest names, going into the tournament.  27-2 and ranked first in the Big East.  Watch out people.

2. PITT – OK, this team is good, they’ve proven to be a surging force.  I don’t know what happened when they played PC, or maybe PC just was on their game that night, but PITT is an incredible force to be reckoned with. They’re only 27-3 and still a team to beat.

3. And comes my sleeper team - Marquette – Although Dominic James is out with a broken bone in his foot,  I still have hope for this team.  Although the results of their remaining games against Pitt and Louisville will play a major role in their position in the tournament.  Come on Golden Eagles, the Friars beat Pitt, you can too.

* I’m considering a March Madness contest…any idea for prizes? I’m up for anything…well, almost anything haha*

P.S. Having an ITouch is pretty baller. :)

I’m trying something new.  From now on, I’ll be posting up a new poll just to see where you guys stand on certain ridiculousness in sports.

Here’s the first one:
